Protect the Environment While Traveling

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

1. Pack Your Bags the Eco-Friendly Way

Protecting the environment while traveling will start before you ever leave home! Packing smart is a great first step to literally “lighten the load”. Traveling light means you can personally have less emissions (not to mention avoiding any oversize bag fees).

When it comes to what you pack, opt for versatile, eco-friendly clothing and accessories. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Transitioning to solid toiletries also makes a significant difference. Shampoo and soap bars not only reduce plastic waste but are also TSA-friendly. Plus, they’re lightweight, leaving more room for souvenirs and memories!

2. Consider Your Destination

Did you ever consider that the destination you choose could actually impact how eco-friendly your trip is? Some uber popular destinations experience overtourism, which negatively affects the environment, not to mention the big crowds can kind of kill the vibe, do you agree? When we descend on a location en masse, it can put a serious strain on local ecosystems and communities.

Instead of going to the same places everyone else is… consider opting for lesser-known gems. If we spread our footprints mindfully, we can make a world of difference. Plus, it leads to more authentic experiences and supports local economies in a sustainable way. Trust me, your future self and our planet will thank you for it!

Additionally, where you choose to lay your head at night can greatly influence your environmental impact. Look for accommodations that prioritize sustainability, and here are some things you can look for:

  • Energy-saving lighting
  • Using methods to conserve water
  • Recycling programs
  • Local partnerships

You can also explore alternative lodging options like eco-lodges, hostels with green certifications, or even vacation rentals that have adopted sustainable practices. These choices not only enrich your travel experience but also support businesses committed to preserving the environment.

3. Explore Responsibly and Leave No Trace

leave no trace

Part of protecting the environment as a traveler is getting out and exploring it! After all, we protect what we love. Have you heard of the “Leave No Trace” principle? It’s a simple but powerful mantra reminding us to do things like stay on designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and refrain from picking plants or removing rocks. Bring along a small biodegradable bag for any trash you might encounter, even if it’s not yours. Our trash has to go somewhere! And unfortunately it often ends up in the ocean as pollution.

I’m a big fan of guided nature and animal tours, and this is another way we can positively impact the environment as a traveler. Consider joining eco-tours or guided excursions led by knowledgeable local guides who prioritize conservation efforts. They can provide valuable insights into the ecosystem, ensure your visit has a positive impact, and sometimes even a monetary one if the tour is supporting conservation efforts.

4. Seek out Sustainable Transportation Options

sustainable transportation options

You might be wondering… isn’t the process of getting to our destination pretty bad, environmentally speaking? There is definitely some truth to this, and why it’s important to factor this in when planning your trip. Choosing sustainable transportation options is a key aspect of protecting the environment while traveling! Here are a few options to consider:

  • Opt for public transportation when you can, I love how many beach towns have trolleys that can take you from place to place!
  • Use rideshare services (Uber, Lyft, etc) that offer electric or hybrid vehicles
  • Explore cities by foot or bike (bonus: you’ll get a workout in!)
  • In scenic areas, consider renting electric bikes or joining group tours that utilize eco-friendly vehicles

For longer journeys, explore the possibility of train travel, which often has a lower carbon footprint than flying. If flying is necessary, consider carbon offset programs and choose non-stop flights, as take-offs and landings are the most fuel-intensive parts of a flight.

5. Support Local and Green Initiatives

One of the most effective ways to protect the environment while traveling is also one of the most FUN in my opinion! Supporting local, sustainable initiatives is another way to protect the environment while traveling. Seek out businesses, restaurants, and markets that prioritize locally-sourced, organic products.

You can also engage with community-based projects or volunteer opportunities that focus on environmental conservation or cultural preservation. By contributing to the local economy and participating in responsible tourism, you’re not only protecting the environment but also empowering communities to continue their efforts in sustainable development.

6. Wear Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Another small, yet significant step you can take is opting for reef-safe sunscreen. Certain chemicals commonly found in SPF can wreak havoc on coral reefs, disrupting their growth and vitality. By choosing reef-safe sunscreen, you’re not only safeguarding your skin but also preserving the vibrant marine life that makes our coastal destinations so breathtaking.

On the flip side, reef-safe alternatives use natural, mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that provide effective sun protection without any of the harmful side effects. So, not only are you contributing to the health of our oceans, but you’re also doing your skin a favor by choosing a sunscreen that’s as kind to you as it is to the environment. It’s a win-win!

7. Seek Out Ethical Animal Encounters

Seeing marine animals is hands down my #1 favorite thing to do on a beach vacation. And that being said, when we opt for responsible and ethical encounters with wildlife, we’re not just making memories; we’re contributing to the preservation of our planet’s incredible biodiversity. These encounters, when managed with care and respect for the animals and their habitats, can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

What exactly does this mean? We have to say no to exploitative practices that can harm both animals and their ecosystems. When we actively do our research to seek out operators and experiences that prioritize animal welfare, we’re sending a powerful message to the travel industry. We’re demanding a more sustainable and conscientious approach to tourism, where the well-being of our furry, feathery, and finned friends takes center stage. So, next time you’re planning an adventure, consider opting for experiences that champion ethical animal encounters – it’s a small step that makes a world of difference!

8. Buy Responsible Souvenirs

Those shops that sell only seashells? Just turn and walk away my friend. Sadly, shells are often harvested with living animals still inside of them. Animals shouldn’t have to die for us to have a keepsake on our shelves at home! Here are some things to avoid when it comes to finding sustainable souvenirs:

  • Avoid items made from ivory, horn, or animal teeth
  • Avoid furs/ leathers/silks and other animal products whose source cannot be verified
  • Avoid wooden items that have come from non-sustainable practices
  • Avoid dead, dried animals like seahorses or hummingbirds (yes, in some cultures they are seen as tokens of good luck but this is not an ethical souvenir)
  • Avoid coral or starfish of any kind
  • Avoid anything made from sea turtle shells, commonly called “tortoiseshell”
  • Avoid mass-produced trinkets

Instead, choose unique keepsakes are often crafted with eco-friendly materials or sourced from local artisans, reducing the carbon footprint of mass-produced trinkets. By choosing souvenirs that tell a story of sustainability, we contribute to a more balanced and mindful approach to tourism.

When we invest in handmade crafts or products created by local artists, we’re directly empowering these talented individuals and preserving their cultural heritage. It’s a win-win! So, next time you’re on the hunt for a keepsake, keep an eye out for those treasures that share a commitment to protecting the environment while traveling.
